OzThoughts Friday 26th September 2008

14 "Here's another way to put it: You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill.
15 If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand.
16 Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand--shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven. Matthew 5: 14-16 (The Message).

While Jesus a number of times referred to himself as the light of the world, on the mountain as he spoke to his followers he declared them to be the light of the world. It seems that here he is charging his followers to carry out the same task that he has been given by his heavenly father. He says at the same time do not be shy about it.

Graham Kendrick’s song has become a favourite of many. We love to sing “Shine Jesus, Shine”. However Jesus is saying to us that it is our task to shine. Wee should substitute our own name in there so we sing “ Shine, (your name) shine”. In fact we should not miss the point that Kendrick’s last verse comes to this point:

As we gaze on your kingly brightness
So our faces display your likeness
Ever changing from glory to glory
Mirrored here may our lives tell your story
Shine on me, shine on me

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, I pray that your light may shine on me and that in turn I shall show your light today. Help me to be bold and shine brightly for you, not hiding me light from those I meet. Amen.

Lord, the light of your love is shining
In the midst of the darkness, shining
Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us
Set us free by the truth you now bring us
Shine on me, shine on me

Shine, Jesus, shine
Fill this land with the Father's glory
Blaze, Spirit, blaze
Set our hearts on fire
Flow, river, flow
Flood the nations with grace and mercy
Send forth your word
Lord, and let there be light

Lord, I come to your awesome presence
From the shadows into your radiance
By the blood I may enter your brightness
Search me, try me, consume all my darkness
Shine on me, shine on me

As we gaze on your kingly brightness
So our faces display your likeness
Ever changing from glory to glory
Mirrored here may our lives tell your story
Shine on me, shine on me
Graham Kendrick
