OzThoughts Thursday 9th October 2008

Jesus is our example in all things. Both Luke and Mark mention his habit of withdrawing to a quiet place for prayer.

“As often as possible Jesus withdrew to out--of-the-way places for prayer”. Luke: 5 .16 (The Message).

35While it was still night, way before dawn, he got up and went out to a secluded spot and prayed. (Mark: 1.35 The Message).

Jesus advice to the Disciples about how to pray is translated in the familiar King James Version as “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly”(Matthew 6.6)

The Message makes interesting reading and gets the message from Jesus about prayer through strongly "And when you come before God, don't turn that into a theatrical production either. All these people making a regular show out of their prayers, hoping for stardom! Do you think God sits in a box seat?
6"Here's what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won't be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense his grace. Matthew 6: 5,6).

Be still and know that I am God
Be still and know that I am God,
be still and know that I am God,
be still and know that I am God.

I am the Lord that healeth thee,
I am the Lord that healeth thee,
I am the Lord that healeth thee.

In thee, O Lord, I put my trust,
In thee, O Lord, I put my trust,
In thee, O Lord, I put my trust.

Be still, for the presence of the Lord

Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the holy One, is here;
come bow before him now with reverence and fear.
In Him no sin is found, we stand on holy ground.
Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the holy One, is here.

Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around;
he burns with holy fire, with splendour he is crowned.
How awesome is the sight - our radiant King of light.
Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around.

Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place:
he comes to cleanse and heal, to minister his grace-
no work to hard for him, in faith receive from him.
Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place.

Psalm 46 (New International Version)

1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
Selah

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

7 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Selah

8 Come and see the works of the LORD ,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
he burns the shields [2] with fire.
10 "Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth."

11 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Selah

Psalm 46 (The Message)
1God is a safe place to hide, ready to help when we need him.
2We stand fearless at the cliff-edge of doom,
courageous in sea storm and earthquake,
3Before the rush and roar of oceans,
the tremors that shift mountains.
Jacob-wrestling God fights for us,
GOD of angel armies protects us.

4River fountains splash joy, cooling God's city,
this sacred haunt of the Most High.
5God lives here, the streets are safe,
God at your service from crack of dawn.
6Godless nations rant and rave, kings and kingdoms threaten,
but Earth does anything he says.

7Jacob-wrestling God fights for us,
GOD of angel armies protects us.

8Attention, all! See the marvels of GOD!
He plants flowers and trees all over the earth,
9Bans war from pole to pole,
breaks all the weapons across his knee.
10"Step out of the traffic! Take a long,
loving look at me, your High God,
above politics, above everything."

11Jacob-wrestling God fights for us,
GOD of angel armies protects us.
