OzThoughts Thursday 5th March 2009.
(Please forward this OzThoughts to your friends).
Today’s reading from Matthew embraces the Salvation Army slogan “Heart to God and Hand to man” that was mentioned in OzThoughts last week. The first part tells us to be direct in our requests to God and the second part about what we do for other people.
Dr David Yonggi Cho, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Yonggi_Cho), the Pastor of the worlds largest church in Korea takes hold of Jesus words in the Sermon on the Mount “Don't bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need” and tells us to be specific in our prayers. He tells us that when he wanted a chair for his office, he did not just ask in prayer for a chair but specified exactly the type of chair he required including it must have wheels. Just supplied exactly what he asked for.
The second part of today’s reading says “Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them.” Are you one of the people who stands feeling all alone in a crowded room wishing someone would come and talk to you? Look around there is probably someone else who is feeling the same. You can be the person who solves their problem and be the person who talks to them. You solve your own problem at the same time. Be a friend and you will gain a friend.
The Message version says
Matthew 7:7-12 (The Message)
7-11 "Don't bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This isn't a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we're in. If your child asks for bread, do you trick him with sawdust? If he asks for fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? As bad as you are, you wouldn't think of such a thing. You're at least decent to your own children. So don't you think the God who conceived you in love will be even better?
12 "Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them. Add up God's Law and Prophets and this is what you get.

[Listen: http://www.salvoaudio.com/audio/music4/mus_4999.mp3 ]
Ask! Ask! Ask! and it shall be given;
Seek! Seek! Seek! and you're sure to find;
Knock! Knock! Knock! and the door will open,
For God! God! God! is so good and kind, O yes,
So ask! Ask! Ask! and it shall be given;
Seek! Seek! Seek! and you're sure to find;
Knock! Knock! Knock! and the door will open,
For God! God! God! is so good and kind.
[ In preparation for Easter read a Christian book during Lent which is now. ]
