OzThoughts – Monday 31st August, 2009

There is a simple chorus we used to sing. “He will break every fetter…and He will set me (you) free!”

Now if you had asked me, I would have said this was a Salvation Army Chorus. It might be but I had to look in “Redemption Songs” to find the words. My hunt for the words began because I was thinking there must be more words and I could not remember them.

What I found in Redemption Songs (Chorus 28) were two choruses. A second variation (verse) to the chorus which says:

“He has broken every fetter…And has set me free”.

In simple words there is a reflection and a proclamation that Jesus can do it! And, not only can he do it but he has done it!

Sin binds one up. It is all controlling. It affects all our relationships. But Jesus by his death sets us all free from that.

It reminds me of words of a favourite song of mine:

He breaks the power of cancelled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood avails for me.
(For reference see below).

PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, I thank you for Jesus and his salvation. I pray that as I go into this week, I will go with you and rejoice in the freedom Jesus gives. Help me to tell others of the joy there is in Jesus. Amen.

MEDITATION:

Romans 5 (The Message)

18Here it is in a nutshell: Just as one person did it wrong and got us in all this trouble with sin and death, another person did it right and got us out of it. But more than just getting us out of trouble, he got us into life!
19One man said no to God and put many people in the wrong; one man said yes to God and put many in the right.
20All that passing laws against sin did was produce more lawbreakers. But sin didn't, and doesn't, have a chance in competition with the aggressive forgiveness we call grace. When it's sin versus grace, grace wins hands down.
21All sin can do is threaten us with death, and that's the end of it. Grace, because God is putting everything together again through the Messiah, invites us into life--a life that goes on and on and on, world without end.

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer's praise;
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of his grace!

2.
My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of thy name.

3.
Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
'Tis music in the sinner's ears;
'Tis life and health and peace.

4.
He breaks the power of cancelled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood avails for me.
