Salvationists have long sung a number of favourite songs (hymns) to the tune “Darwells.” However, when our latest Song Books and Tune Books were published in the late 1980s, the tune had found a new name or rather a new spelling of the old name. The familiar tune was now “Darwalls”.

With the tune and the words “Rejoice the Lord is King” running through my mind, I sat at my computer and sought the help of my research assistant “Mr Google” to research the tune and its name.

I found that the correct name of the tune is “Darwall’s 148th”. It was written by John Darwall who was the Vicar of St. Matthew’s Parish in Walsall. It was composed and sung at the inauguration of a new organ at Walsall parish church, in 1773. I imagine the next printing of the tune book might get it right! It is either “Darwall’s 148th” or at least “Darwall’s” or even correctly after the composer “Darwall”! Darwall wrote many tunes for Psalms which were lively and to be sung vigorously. He believed with quicker tunes , the congregation could six verses in the time usually taken to sing just four.

Psalm 148 is a wonderful Psalm of rejoicing and from it we get the words of another hymn which goes to the tune Darwall’s 148th. We can praise God as we reflect on the Psalm and then vigorously sing the hymn. Make the hymn book our prayer book.

Psalm 148 (The Message)

1Hallelujah! Praise GOD from heaven,
praise him from the mountaintops;
2Praise him, all you his angels,
praise him, all you his warriors,
3Praise him, sun and moon,
praise him, you morning stars;
4Praise him, high heaven,
praise him, heavenly rain clouds;
5Praise, oh let them praise the name of GOD-
he spoke the word, and there they were!

6He set them in place
from all time to eternity;
He gave his orders,
and that's it!

7Praise GOD from earth,
you sea dragons, you fathomless ocean deeps;
8Fire and hail, snow and ice,
hurricanes obeying his orders;

apple orchards and cedar forests;
10Wild beasts and herds of cattle,
snakes, and birds in flight;
11Earth's kings and all races,
leaders and important people,
12Robust men and women in their prime,
and yes, greybeards and little children.

13Let them praise the name of GOD-
it's the only Name worth praising.
His radiance exceeds anything in earth and sky;
14he's built a monument--his very own people!

Praise from all who love GOD!
Israel's children, intimate friends of GOD.
