OzThoughts. Tuesday, 3rd November , 2009.

From a little book called "Disorder in the Court." Real court
transcriptions, word for word.

Q: What is your date of birth?
A: July fifteenth.
Q: What year?
A: Every year.

Q: What gear were you in at the moment of the impact?
A: Gucci sweats and Reeboks.

Q: This myasthenia gravis -- does it affect your memory at all?
A: Yes.
Q: And in what ways does it affect your memory?
A: I forget.
Q: You forget. Can you give us an example of something that
you've forgotten?

These misunderstanding so quickly bring a laugh. More formal language and maybe even the unfamiliar surroundings, procedures and protocols of the courtroom bring their challenges. Even to express oneself truthfully under oath may bring its own type of pressure to some.

At times people seem just unable to communicate. Questions and comments are misunderstood and the result is rage or tears. I think some of my hardest work has been in the counselling room trying to get couples to hear what each other is saying. Sometimes I wondered if they were playing roles or expressing their feelings from deep within. It was frustrating sometime for me, the counsellor to know what was going on.

Romans 8: 26 – 28. (NIV)
26 … the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.
28And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8: 26- 28 (The Message)
26Meanwhile, …God's Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don't know how or what to pray, it doesn't matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. 27He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. 28That's why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.

Prayer:

Father God, please excuse me if I sometimes say “teach me to pray”. Help me instead to come into your presence more often. In fact, help me to live with my heart and whole life open to you. Always open to you. Help me to let my relationship with you be one where your Holy Spirit interprets my prayers. Help me to trust you in all things, so that everything will work according to your plan. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer is the soul's sincere desire
Uttered or unexpressed,
The motion of a hidden fire
That trembles in the breast.

Prayer is the burden of a sigh,
The falling of a tear,
The upward glancing of an eye
When none but God is near.

Prayer is the simplest form of speech
That infant lips can try;
Prayer the sublimest strains that reach
The majesty on high.

Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice
Returning from his ways,
While angels in their songs rejoice
And cry: Behold, he prays!

Prayer is the Christian's vital breath,
The Christian's native air,
His watchword at the gates of death;
He enters Heaven with prayer.

O thou by whom we come to God,
The life, the truth, the way!
The path of prayer thyself hast trod:
Lord, teach us how to pray!

Thanks for posting James Montgomery's fine hymn on prayer. He's also the one who gave us the great Christmas carol, "Angels from the Realms of Glory." Today is the 238th anniversary of his birth. To learn more about the hymns we sing, I invite you to check out my daily blog on the subject, Wordwise Hymns.
